Thanks for the reply. I still haven't been able to make my phone accept the OTA, so I haven't needed it yet.

Yeah, same here- this did not preserve root but re-rooting ran fine.

Which update did you use? Was it obtained OTA or online?

I'm a member of Moto's soak testers group so it was OTA but only registered and invited folks get it. Otherwise you'll need to get it online and flash manually.

Thanks...I declined that invitation because they wanted me to go to stock before receiving the update...and also wanted me to disclose if my phone had ever been rooted.

I just told them I rooted, no big deal- they expect it. I'm stock+rooted only issue is with flashed (non-stock) firmware. I didn't even un-root, it isn't an issue and while the OTA will wipe root you can just re-root.

I also got the update last night. Was able to re-root. I DID NOT go through any root-keeping shenanigans -- as far as I can tell, they are not necessary for this update!

I noticed the dab method changes permissions of the mpunt-ext3.sh file at the end to 777 -- do we need to do that via RE as well? That's just universal executable / rw permissions so its easy enough done if we need to ... wondering if that's why people are not actually maintaining root through the OTAs...

Wouldn't using

chattr +i /system/bin/su
chattr +i /system/xbin/su
chattr +i /system/app/Superuser.apk

be more effective?

No its essentially just a different route to the same destination.

And the main difference is that Voodoo doesn't work with the leak for most people.

I did this (Root Explorer method) before applying the latest .181 update, but still lost root. 'Motofail' was able to reroot my phone.
