The commuter series has the hard shell over the softer inner rubber part, so i'm sure you could slide it in and out of your pockets fairly easy. The defender, which comes with the belt clip/holster is reversed, hard plastic inner case, rubber outter portion which feels to my touch a tad more tacky with more grip). While I haven't had a issue getting it in and out of my pocket while not in the holster, not sure if that would be the same for everyone.

I have a Maxx and just couldnt get a grip on it for some reason. Its slipped out of my fat hand twice. After getting the otter box case the phone feels much nicer to me. Plus the volume and on/off buttons are MUCH easier to find and use.

Unlike the razr, the razr maxx will not fit in its car dock with a case on it. So, as i use it daily for navigation etc., i do not use a case. I know its not too helpful as you asked if you think we need one. But, its why i dont have one.

I've ordered the car dock for the Maxx but not yet received it. Does it not have the removable insert like the one for the razr?

I hate added bulk. On my DX, I used a screen protector. No more, no less. While it wasn't unscathed after falling to pavement a few times, it worked fine. I actually had a "sock" that I got for my iPhone back in the day from a $0.50 machine at the grocery store that I loved. Just slide the phone in and out. The phone was flawless after about a year of using it daily. Next to no added bulk.

is a screen protector needed? i have the otterbox commuter for the razr and using it w/o the screen protector because of bubbles filling up the screen when i apply it and without it the screen feels smoother.

Nothing is needed, but you can scratch gorilla glass. I was listening to a NFL game on a phone once and it sounded better face down. I put it face down on the hood of car and it started to slide down. I grabbed it, and the pressure of me stopping it plus the slide along the hood with whatever fine particles of road dirt were on there scratched it. Never again will I put a phone face down.

Skinomi, will not get bubbles, but its kind of sucks. There might be some out there that will not bubble that will be as slick as the glass, but I have never used one. Skinomi also gets pretty messed up looking over time despite being space age NASA shuttle used material or whatever. It continues to get great customer reviews though. I really just want a simple sock, or maybe a thin leather sleeve.

otterbox defender.. ALL THE WAY .. I use a case because of the fact sure its rugged and tough... but if i want to sell my device later its easier to do in a pristine condition... Only time my phone comes out of the case is on a sunday.. it gets cleaned and so does the case keeping it looking nice and professional but also keeping it dust free and working beautifully

I do the same damn thing! I agree that it adds bulk, but its so nice when you can take it out of the case and its like you just took it from the packaging... pristine.

I bought the case from Verizon that has the kickstand and its own holster, been pretty good so far, and its easy to remove so I can put it in the car dock. Although a rugged phone the RAZR is, it will still get scratched and dinged up if you drop it.

Well...I really wouldn't want it in my back pocket because it would make my butt look lumpy...but if I were a guy with a little baggier jeans (=baggier pockets) it probably would not be much of a problem...and yes, the top ports are "plugged" sort of. There is a rubber hatch thing that you can pop up to charge or when you need access to the ports on the top of the phone. They look, and feel very secure when they are in their "closed" position. I've had it for a little over a month now, and I can't find a single thing to complain about. I really like the inside liner of the case. Its very soft and flexible and rubbery, so I know it wont be rubbing or scratching my phone. It is also as formfitting as a skin on the phone, and this is where the water protection comes from. The outter shell is very solid and tough. I would say a great 50 bucks spent. (could probably find cheaper online if you had time to look around!) Hope this helps

So i got me and wife commuter otter. Black n pink respectively. We also have screen protectors (as i have scratched gorilla before) and i am very happy. It feels very secure yet not to bulky. Whats best i got both for 35$ including shipping!
Thanks for the great advice!

For screen protectors on all devices go with SGP Steinhall if you can. They are a dry application and are probably the easiest to apply. You get two in a package (one pkg cost about $15) but they have many different types of screen protectors.

Simply put, they are the easiest to apply and the best screen protectors in the game.

W/ that said my phones reside in Otterbox Defenders when available. I go through a lot of phones and it's just easier to sell a pristine phone then trying to document every little smudge and scratch.

I will say however I have had both the commuter and the defender for the Razr and the defender has been a big disappointment compared to other defenders out there (Rezound, Bionic, DX, etc that I've had).

Has anyone ever tried those full body skins? I remember seeing one on a droid razr accessory website and it looks like the zagg screen protector but its a full body protector for the phone. It didn't have any reviews but sounds like a great idea and i was thinking about getting one for myself if they work as well as the screen protectors.

Search on you tube you can find many videos on screen protectors and the full body ones. And decide what works best for you?

I have one laying around somewhere that I haven't tested yet... got it from Xtremeguard's eBay store for something like $4 shipped.
