This is just one of several loosely related questions... A while back, what started as a "simple" investigation of the rabbit hole has (inevitably) turned into another full on open-pit free-fall of learning the hell out of it and exploration for me. It's times like these I question myself and wonder how much I really need to know to effectively benefit from my inquisitiveness. I'll avoid backstories and unrelated tangents for now to spare everyone's time and get down to brass tacks.

I'm (always) still learning and humbly welcome corrections to anything I may be misrepresenting, have an incorrect understanding of, or any usage of improper terminology. I'm not looking to root, modify, unlock, or any other shenanigans just yet because I feel it's important to understand and practice the fundamentals first. So for now, I'm trying to get a solid grasp on flashing pure vanilla, keeping everything as stock-OEM as possible

I have several XT926s and I've noticed that on the ones that have the final update/build the About phone under Settings shows a Build number of "KDA20.64-15", which is also displayed in the recovery. Some of these units have booting/boot-loop issues or other "quirks" once booted. My understanding at this point is that these problems can essentially be attributed to either a hardware failure or software corruption. Assuming corrupted software, the consensus is to flash the device with the exact same firmware version or updated version.

To get to the point, I've been trying to find the KDA20.64-15 FXZ, but I've only found KDA20.64-15.1 which I've successfully flashed and verified on at least one device. I'm trying to understand what the difference is between these two versions, if any at all. I'm sure I'm wrong on this, but my initial guess was that this was a way to perhaps differentiate between how the phone received the firmware; for example, KDA20.64-15 is "official" via OTA update or installed at the Moto factory/authorized OEM warranty repair center, and KDA20.64-15.1 is a leak or public/developer version. The most relevant information my searches turned up are in the links below:

I ran across

, but given the context, defunct link, and some instances of .15 and .15.1 being interchanged... I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Just a follow-up question on this: So if I'm currently on a xt926 running a ROM (with a KK Bootloader), and I want to flash the most recent .15 FXZ to take me back to stock temporarily, what flashing button in RSD Flasher should I click on? Full Flash or Universal?

If one doesn't mind me asking.. Where are you finding this .15 FXZ at? The .15 is basically just patches and I don't see a DL on

Am I missing something with basic searching?  I searched for ".15", with and without quotes and got a nice fat cipher.  :horse

As Kaos said the trick is going to be finding the files for the xt926. About two years ago the government made a drm sweep and most of the sites were forced to shut down. Due to the age of the phone development slowly drifted away. I will dig through my archives and see what I can find there. I still have two xt 926 droid razor maxx HD. but haven't even hit the on button on either one to see if it would boot up in over three years.

Let's see if I can remember and summarize... So far, I've downloaded these FXZs to mess around with, but I'll gladly accept others! I definitely recall the flip flopping (FCC?) regulation and I believe a presidential order (Obama?) that as far as I know has finally resulted in

, but nothing about firmware files or ROMs. I thought that was the appeal of Android anyways, the "freedom and flexibility" akin to custom building a PC with an OS of preference for those who are so inclined. I'd certainty like to understand more of what you're referring to though.

... There are a lot of older information here as well as newer but so much has changed in the last couple of years that there isn't nearly as much development going on. ...

Just today I learned that

. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if downloading and flashing firmware was illegal now.

Regardless, I'd still like to understand the .15 vs 15.1 difference.

I do know that with a locked boot loader you have to flash the exact version your running or newer. That and you have an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery for custom roms. When I get time around the weekend I will dig through my older hardrives and find the archives. All I have on this machine is the factory .10-1 and the .15-1. If you have any of your phones running .15 the only shot at unlocking them is with a tool called sunshine and it costs you per phone to unlock.

Jcase is the developer of that tool if I remember right.

Both my 926's are unlocked and rooted

Yes sir, I agree and distinctly remember reading that too, frequently. It's as common as the other phrase I often see around here, usually something like, "PLZ BRO, you MUST help!!!!!!!!!!  soup spoon me instructions to UNLOCK bootloader for 182.46.15!!! after using the cracked screen to file my dog's nails!!!!! EVEN BETTER, use your Force to Jedi the hell out of it while I go nappy!!!! FOR FREEE!!!!" :D

You don't really need to go through all that trouble spainter, I won't stop you though. LOL

I've heard of sunshine before, but the possibility of using it for unlocking .15 builds is news to me. When I eventually get to unlocking, I wouldn't pay for it anyways considering I've already got a couple with older builds that I can use the exploit on along with some XT925s that I've verified with Moto's OEM unlocking tool website. It grinds my gears to think I fully paid for the phone up front and don't get the same benefit of Moto's site that's available for global/unbranded units, I own the damned thing...

Unlocking is down the road for me, first priority is getting familiar with the basics. At this point I'm treating the .15 builds I have as a practice and learning opportunity. I'd rather screw the pooch learning on the .15s than on the other viable units sitting here.

Well, I've run across snippets of information that, despite not directly answering my question AFAIK, are interesting and may ultimately relate. Unfortunately, these posts also raise some additional questions about things I wasn't aware of.

I read through this entire thread,

Regarding a different model but possibly related to my previous senence... Externally, I ran across a scant comment here,

 by someone named "bweN diorD",

"this is the same situation as the hd, 2 updates essentially the same except for the signing keys.

there should be no issue flashing the 30 file, if it fails in rsd, edit the getvar lines out of the xml file."

At this point, my limited understanding is that the .15 is an official OTA patch. Still unclear about the 15.1 though.
