Actually, there is a modification you can do to make windows 8 act just like previous versions so that you have a start menu and you don't have to use metro.

Not even a mod. Just a setting. I haven't used it for a while now but that was how I had it set.

Oh ok. I thought it was a mod. I had win 8 a while ago but never actually used the setting or whatever. I am one if the few that actually liked the new metro ui.

Pretty sure that hack/setting only worked on the Consumer Preview, with the Release Preview it does not work.

Only worked on the "developer preview." Either way Windows 8 is garbage.

Windows 8 is a great operating system if you install it and give it a chance. Everyone here just hates change.

What the heck. Linux does not always have a start menu depending on the dIstro.

Windows 8 is a fine release candidate. Calling it garbage... I expect better from you man.

I have win8 on all my main machines. Anyone who can't hang needs to not speak.

When you can code a better OS then u can talk smack.

You show me where the Consumer version of Windows 8 will ever be viable in a workplace environment. The only way to make that work is to turn off the Metro UI and then you are left with Windows 7, so why upgrade?

No, I don't hate change... I just don't like running a tablet os on my desktop or laptops ;-)

I'm a Linux and Mac user at this point, I don't care about the start menu really. I just think it's probably okay on a tablet, but less than ideal for desktops and laptops. I do think it will flop on PC's and may do somewhat okay on tablets.

The man is entitled to his opinion, don't hate on him for stating it! I think it's garbage too, but then again I think windows was already garbage in comparison to Linux or OS X :-)

You guys realize you are arguing about an OS that isn't even shipping or finalized yet, right?

It's not that ppl "can't hang" they just don't want to ;-)

I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are. It's not cool to say we "can't speak" because we disagree with you!

As for your statement about coding a better os, that's just a ridiculous statement man... Seriously?

Ya, but release preview will be almost identical to the final release. The base of the OS won't change...

Lot more to it than just a fancy new interface; security is much tighter for one, I read somewhere about all applications running in sandbox sessions, therefore viruses will be much more difficult to spread on a machine. Not to mention a built in anti virus software.

I don't see windows 8 coming to a workplace environment any time soon. I work for a county office and we're only just now going to 7. Most of us are still on xp and probably the only reason we're switching is because m$ is pulling the plug on xp in 2014.

Agreed, the "base" will not change, but as far as UI (that seems to be most people's issue), that could very well change. Not that they would remove Metro, but they might add an option for legacy mode. If they do not, I agree with others that have said they will have a hard time getting industry to accept it. For personal use though, I don't see a big problem.
