Here are some tips for anyone who is having trouble getting a valid IP address. The first thing you should check is the network configuration within VirtualBox. If your computer has more than one network adapter, VirtualBox may be trying to use the wrong one, which would result in the Linux VM being unable to acquire an IP address. Please look at the attached picture. The only thing you should ever change is the drop down box field called "Name:". If you change any other settings, either change them back, or re-import the .ova file again.

Thank you. This worked out fine; I encountered some problems while connecting to the samba server, but it finally worked after renewing the mac address in the virtual box settings.

Has anyone else run into issues work 4g connectivity since successfully completing this? I can no longer get 4g and I can't trace the cause?!

I have not nor i have not heard of this happening from rooting..but i dont know everything. You may need to go over and post in the House of bionics and they can lead you in the proper direction.

Crazy question. I was currently on stock ICS .246 Rooted. Now I am on the new Jellybean update and I have rooted my phone. I backed up my information from when I was on stock ICS .246 with titanium backup. Im currently on Jellybean the new update and I am trying to restore the information from what was on my ICS to the new Jelleybean updated phone. For some reason when I try to restore my information titanium back up says that there was no back up done when obviously I did a backup because in the files app I can check where the saved backup files are. So I know they are there but Titanium back up can not read them. IS it because Jellybean can not read the ICS Backup?

Go into TiBu -> menu ->Pref -> backup folder location and choose the folder where your backups are

This is a great tool! When I rooted my Bionic, this wan't out yet. Just rooted a family member's Bionic with this and it was the smoothest it could possibly be! Thank you!

I had run the exploit after my OTA update and even though at the time I was still virginal it wasn't TOO difficult. HOWEVER this is the GD'd easy button here!! I recently received a replacement device from VZ and was going to just repeat what I had done until I saw this posting. Thanks alot Marty, I followed the instructions and it worked like a champ.

4th Update 5/2/2013 - Found a bug... Nothing that would affect the overall functionality, but it could cause some users to think that their phone is successfully connected via USB debugging, when it really isn't.

 

Update 5/2/2013 - Per user requests, adding link to VirtualBox download site on the original post.

 

3rd Update 5/1/2013 - I changed the code that 'finds' the exploit file to make sure it get executed successfully. It's now using the "PATH" environment to do this. This is more reliable than the actual Linux 'find' command I was using before. Also added some additional instructions to clarify some steps based on feedback from users. Finally, added code to detect if the network adapter is not configured correctly. It will alert the user to configure the network adapter properly in the VirtualBox application.

 

2nd Update 5/1/2013 - I added some lines to the script to stress the importance of pressing one of the three hardware buttons on the phone (Volume up, Volume Down, or Power) once the exploit has been executed. After discussing this with the author of the exploit, this is an important step to obtaining root.

 

UPDATE 5/1/2013 - New and improved .ova file. Contains improved logic in the exploit script to help with some of the problems that have been encountered by users.

Hey folks, I'm a UNIX admin by profession, so I took the challenge over the weekend to come up with an easy root process for Bionic stock Jelly Bean, specifically for those who aren't familiar with Linux.

 

I decided to build a Linux VM under Oracle VirtualBox on my Windows PC. This seemed like the logical choice since VirtualBox is free, a relatively small download, is easy to install and it's easy to import VMs.

 

My first attempt was using CentOS Linux. It worked, but the file required for users to download was over 450MB... Back to the drawing board!

 

Started looking for very small Linux distros and found Tiny Core Linux. This worked well. The file required for download is 50 MB.

 

Everything you need to root the Bionic is here and it is automatic. The process will walk you through connecting to the Samba file share, connecting the phone in USB debugging mode, and OF COURSE, it will run the process to root the phone.

 

Here are the steps:

 

1) Install Sun VirtualBox on your Windows PC.

for all your efforts. I just wanted to ask if this method works for a (non-Verizon) Razr Maxx (XT910) running UK retail JB? Or is this only for Bionic? I read Dan's post and there he says that it should work on XT910 as well. I'm currently on Stock ICS and hesitated to flash JB fastboot for I'm not sure if I can have root access after that. Any ideas?

There aren't any instructions...it just goes through by itsself...and kept saying something about my mouse. Also kept saying something about my network adapter from my computer. Any ideas?

During the process I noticed that since the package was devised for Bionic it didn't include XT910 in USB filters. So I added that to the package and here's the modified "appliance package" you can download:

Also a few important points that might help in a successful rooting process:

 

1.when you start the assembly it may give an incompatibility error about your network interface, just click change network settings and let it automatically find your network interface. If you still think it is a wrong one, choose from drop down list. and then click ok.

2.Don't rush VM installation, let it install all drivers and create a working virtual network. if it is in the process of obtaining ip, let it finish first.

3.make sure you have all your motorola drivers for windows installed and working.

4.when you get instructions to connect your phone via usb, and connected your phone, make sure you give time to system to install drivers automatically, and if windows asked about drivers, choose an automatic driver installation. after this step is done proceed further.

5. finally don't miss the important step of pressing hardware button on your device, it happens very fast during reboot and you have to keep an eye for it.

6. all instructions will be given through terminal, just follow them. Good luck and happy rooting!

FINALLY, that's the right one! The link provided above is indeed the one that leads to the right .OVA file with the appropriate filter for the XT910 (OTA) JB 4.1.2 (Rogers/Canada). Once you get *deamon running* and it stops indefinitively, you need to click DEVICES, USB DEVICES, then choose XT910. Once this done, the exploit restarts smoothly and fast. BTW I missed the instructions about pressing the power/volume button and the phone underwent the process regardless by rebooting twice on it's own and completing the rooting process successfuly. Go figure!

I was messing with some stuff I wasn't supposed to be and fried my CM10.1 AND stock side of my phone. Couldn't boot into SS to even switch to a different slot. Fun. Had to FXZ anyway, so I finally went to stock JB (with option to return to stock ICS ...)

 

I was going to mess with the original method this was based on, but I figured I'd give this a shot first because I didn't feel like rebooting into gentoo and trying to do it with a cranky 2 year old on my lap.

 

Worked GREAT on Win7x64. Nice easy frontend to the root, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone who has a bionic

Thanks for automating djrbliss's work Marty! It took me 3 tries, but it finally worked.  My issue was with pressing the hardware button.  After reading someone else's suggestion, I waited until the phone had rebooted almost completely before pressing the volume down button (not holding it) and was finally able to get root!
