a friend has this phone with JB 4.1.2 (stock). recently, he's complained about a problem when he receives a call from a contact, it would briefly sound the ring tone (for less than half a second), then repetatively announce the caller id. this is consistent regardless of the phone ring settings (we've tried switching between the 3 options of caller id, caller id & ring tone, ring tone).
i inititally thought it was his zedge app, so I uninstalled it and rebooted his phone. the first time, it worked. after that though, the problem returned.
I would not be surprised if it is a rogue app (he claims that he did not install any new apps prior to this problem, and it was working just fine even when he had the Zedge app). but I just wanted to see if there is a setting I am missing.
he doesn't want to perform a factory reset (he thinks he can get VZW to send him a new phone).
any ideas short of rooting?
