u have to open the google app in the app drawer to initialize google now first

yea I noticed that...any particular reason why?Yes. You dont get audible que though. It takes you to the google now searchbox to type in what you want or you can say google to search vocally

Long press of search takes you into google now vocal search if you set google search to be the default application

ok so it's just the option of type searchsingle tap of search allows you to type in the google now searchbox or you can tap the mic to speak

any way to update google Now? i get the message saying there's an update available, but Google Play won't let me update since ICS isn't supposed to be supported
Have you tried editing the build.prop to a different sdk version?

Using a root file explorer, navigate to System.
Find the "build.prop" file and press and hold on it.
Open the file with a text editor
Look for this line:
Should be Line 6 in the build.prop file
Change the "15" to a"16" (You will probably get some force closes after this, just ignore them until after you try to update Google Search.
Your line in the build.prop should now look like this:
Reboot and try updating Google Search now. If it doesn't work then I don't know what else to suggest.
If it does work, after updating is complete, go back and change Line 6 in the build.prop to this:
Reboot and you should be good to go!
