Nice write up...very clear and easy to follow.

Now the bad news...OTA rootkeeper is unable to restore root. When I select "restore root"...there is a message that says rootkeeper has been granted superuser permissions..and then it says "su root restored"...

BUT two of the checkboxes "device rooted" and "root permission granted" remain unchecked and unfortunately the phone is not rooted.

Suggestions?

Something touched the file. Fixing permissions, edits, etc etc. May not have been you, but one of your root apps. It's failing the current system verification.

Roll back to 748. re root/protect. Upgrade again. I had the same issue during one of my trials.

Thanks arc.

I like the update so far. I think the camera is working better. I notice updates to a lot of stuff. Cardock looks slightly different. Everything seems quite snappy.

So if i reset/wipe my phone at this point, I'm gonna lose root correct?

Both times Ive done this I have gone from a rooted 748 w/no safestrap (**just a note that I rooted it after the OTA upgrade since this is a new phone today checked root and Root Explorer allowed me to switch to r/w),

installed the voodoo, backed up SU....

then flashed the 173 and then when I try and redo the voodoo...it says su restored but no checks.

Is there something missing from the OP that I need to do?

now, I am RSD'g stock 744...what should I try....

1) root...voodoo...back up SU....then goto 748? same process?

No use for safestrap until after your ready to use roms again. All you need is Voodoo, after you root.

No safestrap or cwm here. I was stock rooted 748, ran voodoo, updated and it rerooted just fine. I unfroze all the frozen apps before updating. Otherwise I had not modified or removed anything.

You can't have the update bust your root, you have to temp unroot using Voodoo before rebooting into motorecovery. Yes it does, for the last update, the first update it doesn't matter because that's over the air.

For the record I've never temp unrooted. The one time i did temp unroot, it had the same issue he's having now. That's why i never did since.
