I messed up my Seagate 500gb external hard drive. I've uploaded a pic of what my computer is seeing.

I didn't know that plugging it up to the ps3 would mess it up but it did :(
I don't care if the drive ever works again. All I NEED to do is get all the pics off of it. Pics of my family and my kids!

What I've tried:
-I've taken it apart and hooked up directly with
-USB and still nothing.
-Recuva just hangs and don't do anything.
-Partitioning won't work.

I'm out of options. Please help!
Thanks

I had the exact same issue after i plugged a seagate 1 terabyte external into a ps3..... i called seagate and they said the only way to recover the data is to send it in to a professional data recovery center. Which can cost up to a couple thousand dollars (if they successfully recover your data) ... definitely NOT something you can do at home unless you have the proper hardware/software and a "clean room"...

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but out of curiosity, what happens when you plug a hard drive into a ps3 and why does it do this to the hard drive?

I guess that the ps3 formats them to their own format so it can use it... I'm not sure. But I def learned from it! The hard way.

Sony told me that the only thing they could figure was that the ps3 was trying to read the external hdd as its own internal hdd thus tries to install its own firmware on it..... and of course they would not even refund the cost of the external hdd ... they suggested that the ps3 had been infected with some sort of malware... therefore it was not the responsibility of sony...SMH... my ps3 also got hosed as a result of it... cause it no longer would take take its own firmware on its internal hdd..... still they say it was not their responsibility.....

So for a year now ive been trying to get seagate to send me a copy of the proper firmware and instructions on how to flash it back (since it lives on a unreachable sector of the hdd and in flash memory on the board) according to seagate....... but they keep saying that they are not allowed to just hand out proprietary firmware....

I once had a really bad emergency case of lost data and thus tried lots of forensic tools. The one above was the ONLY one able to solve my problems.
Try the free version and see if it gets a grip on your data. If so, you'll have to pay the price for the full version

For future reference.... "if you are going to transfer files to/from the ps3.... we recommend that you set up a wireless network between your computer and the console" ..... Sony

Thats their way of blowing it off....

That is a great program... ive used it before.... however it does have a limitation, if the firmware on a drive/disk is corrupt... even it MAY not work... but it is definitely worth a try (the free version) .... hopefully it will do the trick

That sounds about right. This big companies never take responsibility for their mistakes, screw ups, design flaws, etc. Very depressing.

Does the hard disk even spin up, or is it literally dead? The reason I ask is, the controller may be bad. If the USB is pinned out wrong, etc., then you could have an issue where the controller card was damaged.

Dont think its a pin out issue (unless the ps3 changes the pin configuration) lol.... hopefully we all can eventually come up with a solution... ive been a year without mine.... 800 gig of information is a lot to give up on real easy :)

One thing I'm not following with yours..... you said it was a 500 gb hdd.... why is your computer showing 2 Tb of un allocated , not initialized space? Even with corrupt firmware, it shouldnt be able to read beyond the physical limits of the dtive....

There is an app for that.

Actually there are several. I'll just link you to a Tom's Hardware page that has several links to try out. I think I've used 'TestDisk' in that past with success.

I wish you both luck in your recoveries. I did have a client use one of those professional companies and they were able to get back his data (68GB) for a mere $3,500. ouch.
