So I'm fairly familiar with rooting and custom recoveries, at least installing/using them. Had an OG Droid for two years before I moved up to the Droid 3. Never had any problems rooting or any other such related things with them. Picked up a RAZR HD today. I rooted the phone as soon as I got it home with djbliss' one-click method and didn't have any problems. I then proceeded to update to the OTA Jelly Bean push VZW put out recently, not realizing it would undo my root. I used the RAZR HD Utility 1.10 to revert back to ICS, root again, install Rootkeeper and Safestrap. I didn't realize Rootkeeper needed to be told to protect su so I did the first OTA update before Jelly Bean and lost root AGAIN. Duh doiy! Used the Utility for the second time to revert back to stock firmware and re-root, I used Rootkeeper to "protect" su and then updated to 4.0.4. Rootkeeper didn't work, so I just tried rooting again. Checked with Root Checker and I'm good to go after the first OTA update.

My problem:
Now the phone won't update to Jelly Bean. When the Safestrap start-up menu appears---[Recovery] and what ever the other option is on the right [System] or whatever, it says at the top that Safestrap is disabled.. but I have no problems installing rom slots or wiping data/cache, etc. I have no issues downloading the update (which is freaking HUGE) but when I let the phone reboot to install it, it immediately goes to that Safestrap splash screen and continues to boot up. When the phone has started up, a message pops up saying that the software update failed. Anyone else have this issue? Should I be installing the Jelly Bean update directly through Safestrap?

The only thing I can think of that may have interfered is that my Droid 3 was plugged into my laptop momentarily when I was using the Utility to install Safestrap. The Utility failed though and I unplugged my D3 and then tried again with the RAZR HD and had no issues. Can ANYONE please help? I would so appreciate it.

Thanks!
GM82

Easy enough.
Option 1 on Utility 1.10 and only have your DROID RAZR HD plugged in. (In Fastboot mode, following the directions of course)
Take the OTA Update to 0.7.2. Boot it up, but do not update to Jellybean yet.
Root the phone with it.
Open the Superuser app, go to the Info pane. Make sure it says Superuser app is 3.1.3 and the su binary is 3.1.1. If not, update respectively.
Download Project Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Open it up and hit 'Protect Root' giving it root access when asked.
Hit Temp Unroot
Hit Restore Root
Hit Temp Unroot
Hit Restore Root.
Take the OTA to Jellybean.
Hit Restore Root in the Rootkeeper app once Jellybean is booted.

Now you are free, on Jellybean, and rooted.

Okay, so I've gotten JB installed and I've got root, but Safestrap is saying that the recovery is installed but when I power the phone off and on it just boots normally. Is there is a specific JB version of Safestrap that I need? I'm using the latest of hash's site and it says it's installing the Recovery fine??

Edit: Nevermind! I did have the wrong version! Thanks so much for your help with this mattlgroff! :D

I will preface this by saying I am brand new and very green to all of this. I have a Razr HD and have sucessfully used Matts utility to roll it back to ICS. I have obtained Root Access. And I have installed VooDoo Rootkeeper. I have obtained Root Explorer and did some edits so the Time Warner Streaming app works on the rooted phone and renamed Superuser.apk as part of that modification. I have obtained SQLEditor and made an edit to the entitlement checks as I am on unlimited data.

I have accepted the small ICS update. Now, I want to accept the JellyBean update, keep root, and keep everything the way it is.
I did not install Safestrap as I don't know whats it for.

I would appreciate some further instructions from this point.

Thanks

You need to use Voodoo OTA Root keeper to restore root after installing Jelly Bean, the instructions above got it done no problem for me. Safestrap is like an alternate boot loader that let's you flash custom ROMs safely without affecting system files on devices with locked boot loaders.

Do you leave temp unroot checked in superuser, then protect root with voodoo, then OTA? Should you uncheck temp uproot in superuser prior to updating?

Everything appropriate, but jelly bean update fails. Binary updated, backup made, temp uproot before OTA. Goes half way, gets red exclamation point and reboots. Something I'm not doing?

Never mind. Repeated the process and everything worked just fine. Now running JB with root. I did not install safestrap, as I dont think I will using custom ROMs at this point. Is it necessary to have this loaded for recovery?

Nope you can just stay stock rooted. Only load safestrap if you do decide to flash custom roms and such. Just get familiar with stock recovery just in case you (doubtful you will really need to) do a factory data reset or wipe cache in the future. Enjoy JB!

I am lost.

I have rooted ICS 4.04, system version 0.7.2.XY926.verizon.en.US

Safestrap 3.12 says "installed (however safe system says "not active")

voodoo has root protected (temp unroot)

when I try to update OTA, it throws me into fastboot mode...- how do I change this?

You need to uninstall Safestrap in order for it to work.

The phone must have the stock recovery.
you cannot take an OTA or install an OTA zip with a custom recovery.
Safestrap needs to be gone.
