I was in the same boat, tried the utility and it failed. Now, my OTA rootkeeper app said there was a protected copy of SU but would not restore.

THIS is what I did to restore Root via the utility.

COPY Superuser.apk and SU in the zip file to the SDCARD on your phone. (not the sdcard-ext)

Rerun the utility

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to linux and exploits (and it's about to show lol) but I was curious about something...

Why wouldn't simply copying files from a rooted JB maxx to say a non-rooted maxx hd that came with JB pre-installed work, or flashing the ics kernel, system.img, preinstall.img, etc... or something along those lines onto the maxx hd?

So basically there is NO way to root an xt912 if we just did the JB update from a file and did not retain root?

Did you do this after installing the JB update? Or did you do anything to retain root?

You can delete your backup in voodoo, then get into the stock recovery and reinstall the update that you probably have saved on your ex-SD card. If you don't have a copy, find a link and save it there for this purpose.

Actually, I'd bet you could simply do a factory reset and it will be as good as new, out of the box. You could also use one of matt's utilities to reset the phone to job.

Thinking about it, there are several way to unroot, just none that will keep your stuff in there.

I updated to JB then used the utility mentioned above. Open that up and copy those two files I mentioned to the SD card so it will find them. I had previously protected root but forgot to temporary unroot before updating. I could not get voodoo to restore root any kind of way. Thanks Matt
