DISCLAIMER: I am not liable or responsible for any damage to your phone. This is solely the users decision to "root" their phone.

(Update) Dan has posted a Linux/OSX version too!

This is the same exploit that was held for a bounty for the Droid 4 the other day.
It was finally released and it should work on all Moto devices.

Download it here:

The instuctions are easy to follow.

1. Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode
2. Plug your phone into your PC
3. Make sure your device is in charge only mode
4. Ensure you have the latest Motorola drivers installed (available here:

)
5. Extract the entire zip file
6. Double click “run.bat”
7. Enjoy root!

With the .173 OTA not able to root using this method. Debug is on and able to ADB to the device but just not rooting. It puts SU on the device just not able to use SU.

Did you make sure the your device was set to "charge only" and not USB mass storage? I used this method to root .173 and it worked perfect. Did it while I was at work :)

Not a 100% sure I was on Charge only the first time. The second time I was for sure. Any recommendations?

At least my phone still works and not bricked at this point. I bricked my Droid X a couple of times luckily was able to sbf. Thanks for any assistance.

I thought bootstrap was a root method. Do I just download the APk and run it.

I took my razr max back to stock before I tried this. When I got the ota the other night some of my stuff got messed up. What's us not doing for you? I had us but it looked like it wasn't doing anything. I installed titanium backup and ran it. It asks for us permission and worked fine. I don't know much about this so I'm not sure if I can help.
But I don't mind trying.

Can't get this to work. I had previously used the DoomLord method but lost root when OTA to 173. While using motofail method I get an error that ADB is out of date. Once phone reboots, when I start programs that needs root they say they are getting permission but don't actually work. The exception to this is titanium backup which says SU permission denied. Any suggestions? Thanks.

OK, I've done some reading so I'm not completely in the dark, but I'm still a noob at this. I've got a bone stock razr out of the box I just bought a week ago. I did the OTA update and now I have .173.

I just want to be sure there is nothing else I need to do but download this file and the motorola drivers and do both to root my device. Nothing else I need to install/run to prepare my phone for rootness? Will I need to do anything else to try other ROMs?

Thanks for helping the noobs. We need your expertiese!

Nope, you dont have to add anything.
If your on OTA .173 then use this method ( or download matt's utility has everything incase something happens) and root.

Personally I would install bootstrap and make a backup ( some might prefer safestrap, there is a thread explaining differences)

Rom you would need bootstrap or safe strap to flash a new rom.

Worked flawlessly and I have backed up with TB. Do I need to bootstrap in order to maintain root after next update? I have had a rooted nook color for more than a year but it boots from the SD so I haven't had to worry about updates.

Factory reset your phone than make sure it's running 173 than start again being sure everything is set up correctly including the newest drivers. I had the problem with my bionic and it may seem dumb but once it was a clean install it worked. My problem was I didn't put it on charge only and after that it wouldn't activate the superuser till I did the above and to be honest I may have had to flash the whole fastboot files as a last resort
