look at the post that livingkaos provided, it has other libs to install as well. Dans post only has ia32-libs, but it may require other libs, I cant speak from experience as I dont have these devices, just try to provide help :)

CMH, I am  just wondering if we should take the sound issue to its own thread ???

Sounds fine by me.

Looks basically correct. I dont have the same on my xt912...

Is the Bionic.ogg set with correct permissions, needs to be rw-r-r

Yes, read/write for root read for group and other....

Really in the grand scheme of things, my phone is rooted so it's all good!  Just wondering why animation sounds stopped working.

I don't know if this helps anyone as I've not tried it at all, but, someone created some VMWare images for various linux distributions.  Basically you install VMWare player, grab an image, load it in VMWare player, login and you should be good to go.  Just make sure networking is set to bridged and reboot if necessary.  Then you should be able to start from the instructions in the OP...in theory.

As an addition -

Here is a video on setting up VMPlayer and Ubuntu 32 bit for the Rooting process.  This stops at the point where you would start doing the root process.

You know, it's funny. I guess I never checked the stock one.  I put the stock animation and sound back in and low and behold, the sound doesn't work on mine either.  Played with it all around and nada.  Weird.

Well install ubuntu 12 and think I'll stay with it instead of windows. Much better than 11. My problem lies in the WiFi insistence. I do not have WiFi close to my home which is where I'm doing this, and do not have Ubuntu installed on my laptop for when I'm in the truck. Is there a way instead of WiFi to use 4g? I'm not that good with code so be kind.

Pretty sure you wont be getting the smb share working unless on same network, not cellular.

guess that means I'll have to install on my laptop, which is not a bad thing, just a little time consuming. Thanks.

Just one more caveat, then... Many public wifi APs/networks don't allow clients to communicate. I had to reconfigure ours so that clients could talk when I rooted today. edit: disregard-If your wifi is at home its not an issue since most routers automatically are set that way.

Edit: Dual booting Ubuntu on a laptop isn't too hard and if you use Windows mbr you can reverse it pretty easy too. That or just use live cd/usb...

Thanks @djrbliss !

I made it through all of the steps only for superuser to tell me the Superuser binary (su) must be updated.  I'm reluctant to hit recovery install as I tried the Voodoo rootkeeper method which I thought worked, root checker said I had root, but that was not the case.  I also thought I'd uninstalled the previous version of superuse from my phone.

Having come this far, can anyone tell me what steps I need to proceed to gain root?

Many thanks.

Did you attempt to update the binary? You will need to do that.

You can't do it in recovery.  It just has to update the su binary from within the app directly.

Although it says the app is installed when I check the play store, when I try to open it, I get an Install dialog box that says the binary must be updated.  Then offers three options to choose, Cancel, Install Recovery or Install.  When I choose install I get another Install dialog box that says there was an error install superuser, send a log of the error to developer.  I click ok and I get message that says I have no Superuser app policies.   There are no logs, I can get to the setting menu.  Rootchecker says I do not have root.   I know you're going crazy helping everyone, sorry I do not know how to get past this point.  Thanks,

Did you use this threads root method?

Your issues sort of sound like maybe you're in wrong thread (though folks here can probably help you, too).

I think you want
