I can help you mid-day tomorrow if you can wait that long, as my brain is fried tight now. The numbering system is different for GSM, so I'll have to figure out where you are in the progression of upgrades so you have the right file to use. We don't have a solid utility to do it with, but it's really just a matter of loading the update file onto your phone and then installing it while bypassing the phone's "fail" tests. A little harder if that doesn't work, but still workable.
Are you on a PC or Mac? You may be able to do it without a computer, but you may need to use one if the first method fails.
Let me know what error messages you are getting when it fails. It could be an easy fix to get OTA to wotk depending on your phone's status.
You should switch over to GSM part of Forums - that's the one that handles euro models. You should look under Development, and see posts about updating to ICS. Since you didn't root it, I assume this is not that familiar to you, but you may spot something that looks like it will work. If someone there can help you, by all means go for it and don't wait. Otherwise, I'll help you later in the day/night.

I've looked all over but no it isn't familar and most guides seem to relate to CDMA phones or other versions of Clockwork Mod Recovery and so I've no idea if I can use them or not. They also seem to expect a good degree of knowledge already! I wasn't sure if this guy was giving me what I want ( ) but I might get lost following this tbh and was hoping for a simpler way!
Just let me know whenever you are free. Thanks a lot !!

I'll look into tucstwo's excellent suggestions and either walk you through it or find a GSM expert who can.

stealthmouse - just to answer a few of your earlier questions: I have a PC. When I try to update it will download the update and then a quarter way through the installation a warning triangle will appear and it says "the software update failed". It might say the update software version but I don't think it provides an error code or reason.
FYI the version is 672.180.41.en.EU.

From your OP, you seem to indicate that being rooted is not something you need. Is that correct?
More important - due you have a backup of your entire phone using CWM or another app that does backups? And secondly, did you try a factory reset of the phone before trying the OTA? Sometimes that will fix the issue, but that's rare. More typically, you're missing a file or two....

Do you mean a factory reset using CWM or just the normal way (or is there a difference)? Either way I've not done this but could give it a try later today.
I'm not bothered about preserving the root as I do nothing with it. I bought it off ebay rooted so was unaware that it was. I was pleased it didnt have any bloatware etc. but was hoping I would be able to update normally as I have done this once before with another minor OTA.
TBH I'm not sure if anything is backed up. There are no personal files i'm worried about losing and I can re-download apps etc but do I need this for syetem files?
Thanks,
