The “Motorola Razr I” Review
By Anthony Fox
11/23/12

Today, I decided that I have had enough time with the Motorola Razr I to really write a deserving Review. The Motorola Razr I is not officially available in the United States but Third Party Retailers sell this High Mid Range Phone for around $500.

Build Quality

The build quality of the Razr I is just like every other Motorola phone, top notch. The phone’s front features a 4.3 inch screen that is made of Gorilla Glass 2. The body of the phone is a solid black plastic that doesn’t feel cheap like other plastic phones. The back of the phone is where Motorola has put kevlar to protect the phone from unwanted scratches. Kevlar though, is a fingerprint magnet and smudges easy. Other things about the Razr I that should be mentioned is that it is so called “Splash Proof.” I tested this by using the phone in the heavy rain and I am going to point out that it is still working today with no problems.

Hardware Specifications

The Razr I is sporting an Intel Atom single core processor that is clocked at 2ghz. The Atom processor is a big deal because it is the only mobile processor that does not use the Arm Technology. Also, Intel/Motorola had to make a special build of Android just to get the x86 architecture to run properly on Android. Let me point out that in theory, the Razr I could run programs like Wine that allows Linux users to run Windows 7 programs. No other mobile processor can do this. The Razr I is also sporting 1gb of ram that is more than enough to multitask. The phone comes with a non removable 2000 mah battery and a micro sd card slot.

Performance

The Razr I is by far the smoothest $500 phone I have ever used. The Atom cores runs applications and games in emulation mode and still has no lags. In games, like Need For Speed, I had no problems and I could not find any stutters in the game. In everyday use, you will not notice a difference in the performance just like any phone that has a dual core or quad core arm processor. The stock browser also had little too lag when rendering pages that were java heavy. I was very excited to see this as I was nervous with a single core phone. The one place though that the phone did lag was in Chrome but what phone doesn’t?

Camera Quality

The Razr I simply has the best camera on a Motorola Phone thanks to Intel. Intel has brought a Zero Lag Camera. This means that as soon as you press the camera button on the side of the phone you will immediately be taken to the Camera Application and it will focus in. Overall, Though I was happy with the camera. It is not the camera that it is in the HTC One X but it is a decent smartphone camera. I was able to take pictures in the daylight but like most phones when it got dark pictures were less than viewable. The edges of colors seemed too overlap and I just wanted to find the nearest digital camera.

Battery Life

The battery life on the Razr I is amazing. On average, I was able to get 5-7 hours of display time if not more. My day always starts at 7am and the phone last me till 10pm at night before needing a charge. I usually listen to music on my 20 minute drive to work and back home. I use the internet more than I work so I was happy to see my battery never died. I also was able to use navigation from Youngstown, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio and back. That is over a 5 hour drive.

Call Quality and Signal Strength

The Motorola Razr I has the best call quality out of any Unlocked Gsm Phone I have used. I have been testing the phone on ATT networks and I have yet to drop a call or lose data in the last month. In dead areas that my Note 2 or HTC One X couldn’t hold a call my Razr I stood strong and held it’s signal. This is what I expect from any Motorola Device though.

Conclusion

On the overall scheme’s on phone today, I would give the phone a 8/10. I only say this because it is lacking a 720p display and needs a better camera to be a true competitor. I would recommend this phone though to AOSP purist and beginning phone users. The blur ui is the least intrusive OEM Skin available and is actually in my opinion better than AOSP. Blur gives the phone the needed features to compete against other skins. The phone did have beyond average battery life and had amazing call quality. I would have no problem recommending this phone to someone who is off contract and is looking for a phone that will hold it’s own against other.
