Turn off the laptop. Put battery in and plug in AC. Turn it on and let it boot. Open power options and then remove the battery for a few minutes. Then put the battery back in.

Well that sucks. Might be a hardware issue then. Although if you were that careful when installing the hdd I don't see how it could be.

I "spoke" to satman earlier we have mostly come up with the same thing..... hardware..... i had found a wire on the wifi card that has broken insulation and was grounded on the chassis..... figure that is where the problem started.....

Random thought. Did you try uninstalling
"Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery"?

And you tried unplugging AC and removing the battery. Pressing the power button a few times to drain the power and boot it back up with just the battery and no AC? Thought I saw you tried that but wasn't sure lol. Sorry if I sound redundant. Just tell me to shut up lol.

Only other thing I can think of is the battery drivers. Or a BIOS update is the culprit.

Haha I know that feeling. Just was thinking a BIOS update would Bork the battery. BIOS initializes before the os does so if there was no update done then BIOS isn't the culprit. Sorry I'm more of a software guy...lack hardware knowledge.

Thank you.... ive been planning on putting linux on this one anyway (and put windows in the box) so i guess its good timing? .... but with now getting odd voltage readings on pin 3 and 4 with AC supplied i am convinced it is hardware.....

Looks to me like the battery is good, those would be the correct leads.. hmmmm, pounding my head on this one.. Do you hear any noise from either the laptop charger or battery when plugged in? is Anything heating up more than usual??? Was going to say check AMP draw, but it doesn't draw any and wont matter anyway...

Ok here is the list I have of what's been done, or I assume,

1. Does laptop turn on with only battery while AC unplugged? Yes
2. Does laptop turn on without battery with Ac? Yes
3. Does laptop turn on with both battery and AC? Yes
4. 14volts ok? Yes
5. 5v ok? Yes
6. OS ok? Yes
7. Bios Flash done right? Assume yes, re flash wouldn't hurt
8. Clock battery pulled yet for Bios forced reset? No
9. Found Short? Yes
10. Found obvious damage? No
11. checked parts out on wife's laptop? Yes
12. Hammer? Not yet
