Yea, he released one last insane exploit for the snapdragon moto phones and said "goodbye and thanks for all the fish."  He's done.  Unfortunately that leaves us in a bad situation.  And things are not looking so good for the existing exploits.  So um, crap.

I thought he quit once before and came back though? It may happen again hopefully.

It's different now.  He gave a very specific reason which is that it's taking longer and longer to find bugs to exploit.  Moto keeps patching them as fast as he finds them and he feels there is a diminishing return.  So, don't get your hopes up for a miracle.

Sam,

just wanted to say thanks for your good info.  After following all the directions to a T, I'm now on 4.1.2 while maintaining root :)  after playing around, it's nice.  definitely snappier than ICS, but I do miss some goodies from CM10.1.

So now that this is released, what is the order of events we can expect?  ROMs built on this kernel? Or is a solid exploit needed before that can be accomplished?  I kinda forgot how this went when ICS was released and just kinda curious.

Thanks again for all the good advice and directions! :D

I just installed the ota update and ota rootkeeper did not work for me (probably forgot to update to the latest su thing in the superuser app). anyhow, i have a bunch of things placed in my system/app folder (razr m launcher, circles widget, etc) that will not go away without the help of root explorer. i tried a factory reset and they're still there. when it first booted up i had to choose a homescreen, lol.

can i fxz back to ics then apply the update again?

If you do not have root, you'll have to pray for an exploit.

They're deodexing it now.  Then they'll start working on ROMS.  But the biggest issue is that if anyone screws up their phone, FXZ will obliterate root and there's no known exploit.  IOW, someone's going to have to create a new one.  And with Dan R out of the game it might take a while. I caution everyone not to screw up....you may be able to get a working phone, but, you may be without root in doing so.

No, you can't FXZ back to ICS.  There is a way to clean system and reapply the update but root will forever be gone.  And it's a pain...requires the HoB to do it.

OP updated because people were having issues with updating the su binary, what that meant, and how to do it.  Tried to lay out the steps for each superuser solution.

thanks man!  kind of moot at this point, but do you think now that we have a jb kernel, we'll experience the same issues during development with the camera and flash(camera)?  or because the overwhelmingly awesome dev's were able to get a functioning jb camera on an ics kernel we'll be okay?

also, there's no point in installing safestrap again right now, because since i'm on a jb kernel and all previous roms were on ics kernels it would be pointless right? so just sit back and enjoy until the aforementioned awesome devs cook some roms?

on a side note, i do notice an increased temperature in my bionic since applying the update, BUT the battery life has been MUCH MUCH better than on stock ics OR cm10.1.  i used to eat battery like a fat kid eats cake for some reason, but now i'm at 4 hours 15 minutes and 60% left with heavy heavy use, which for me at least, is a drastic improvement :)

ROM stuff is really not where my knowledge lies.  I believe anything using kexec SHOULD work. Anything built for ICS will not.  The new roms will come in time.  Just be careful not to screw up your phone.  Otherwise, the game is over with regard to root.  For the record, I'm almost done with my own upgrade.  As long as I can get root to restore properly then I'll be happy.

Same here, when and if root is found I'll update but stay stock. When fxz AND root is out I'll play

Well, I've been using JB on my Xoom since July....basically since we started getting ICS leaks.  So to me it's not just about flashing to flash.

Granted. And no disrespect to you Samuri. I get the need to flash. Just don't get the need to do it without backup. Considering modified 2.2 out with fxz friendly ability.

im sure you're mad and don't want to talk about it right now...however, at some point will you walk us through what you did so others can learn from it?

I can promise you no one on earth made this mistake.  So it's irrelevant.
