Ok so we have found a fix.

Before backing up root ensure you have updated superuser (from google play) and then from superuser update the binary (preferences - su binary - tap to check for updates)

Then back up root

and so you dont have to use terminal emulator you can use adb shell and run the cmds from there.

This will fix the _mktemp error.

3. Root using Matts Droid Razr Utility

For the sake of completeness and clarity...which version of Matts Droid Razr Utility did you use?

Worked for me, but wouldn't work after flashing back with Matt's utility. Tried several times, several little "tips" thrown in from the forums. What worked was RSD back to .744, do OTA's > root > then follow the guide for ICS install, then restore root with voodoo (failed) then term commands. That was attempt number 8. I was very glad to get a su permissions popup. lol. Thanks all!

I didn't forget it, I stopped typing the command when I got the no permission error. I'm trying to figure out why that happened before I go further. This method has not worked for me yet. If anyone knows what that error means and can help me I would appreciate it.

Sent from my who really cares?? Using NOBODY DOES!

I'm having the same error.

What have you tried? Give some details. Did you wipe everything? Did you RSD back to .744 or just use Matt's utility? I tried several times with no luck until I RSD'ed back to .744, did the OTA's, then followed the steps from rooting with Matt's utility on. Ended up with a successful root restore using the termnina method.

The solution for one phone may not be the same as for another phone. Some people don't even need the terminal method. The solution is to try different things and see what works for you.

I haven't RSD'd back to 744 yet and was under the impression this method was supposed to be an alternative to having to go through that whole process.
To this point all I've done is typed in the command '/system/su-backup into the terminal app. The su-backup file is in my /system/ folder, but I can't do anything with it in terminal.

Guys, I had the permission denied issue and for me it was due to outdated su binaries, I think. Go back to .173, make sure your Superuser.apk is updated, update the binary from the settings and then do the Voodoo thing again. I also noticed that this was updated to the OP for ICS.. Good luck!

These steps worked for me. Big thanks to PC!! I had to do it a couple of times because i missed some key spaces in the code. This sequence and the spacing is critical. Maybe this is elementry but it was the difference for me. The red _ below signify where the spaces go in the commands.

  • /system/su-backup
  • mount_-o_rw,remount_-t yaffs2_/dev/block/system_/system
  • cp_/system/su-backup_/system/bin/su
Hope this helps a bit and isnt too noob to point out.

Also, you can verify that you have the su-backup in your system folder using root explorer before starting to ensure that it exists. Might save some time.

Thanks! That was actually very helpful.

I hope this helps someone because; I had to go thru this process three times before getting root on ICS.
Here are my steps:
1. Installed (Gingerbread 744) using RSD Lite

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

I did do a wipe factory reset on this step. I did not login, I moved on to step number 2.

2. Installed (Gingerbread 748) using RSD Lite

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

3. Matt tool v1.41 to install (Gingerbread 2.3.6) . My phone booted up.

4. Matt tool to root 2.3.6.

5. Updated SU to new version: 3.0.7(41)

6. Updated to new Binary: v3.0.3.2

7. Protected root (voodoo rootkeeper)

8. Update to ICS per instructions in OP

9. Restored root (voodoo rootkeeper) – DID NOT WORK

10. Used terminal commands – They work this time!

Ok, I understand all of the possible root solutions mentioned. But i need help for FRESH ICS root...

Problem with me is:
I did voodoo root backup, then did factory reset (this is where i went wrong i guess),
then rsd to 744 nd finally updated to ICS( yeah in between i did not root again , nor did i played with voodoo)

After getting the ICS i noticed that my internal SD card was formatted(mebbe cuz of the reset i did), hence i cannot see this su-backup folder(terminal commands dont work for me), and the voodoo is lost somewhere as well.
So no other way i can get the root "back".

NOW, that means i have a phone , as if it came with ICS, hence no past root etc.

Can somebody give a solution to root an ICS CDMA Razr? I know that going back to 744/173 , rooting and then ICS can help..but thats just too long procedure to follow again.

What if in future new buyers of Razr already get their phones with ICS, so they would need a FRESH ROOT on ICS method.
Please advice.

For those of you who WERE rooted & protected root with Voodoo, installed the ICS leak & subsequently lost root like I did,

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

tweeted out some helpful instructions to remedy the issue!

Disclaimers:
I did not personally use this method - before it was available, I had already RSD'd. On my second time through the process, I successfully retained root. Therefore this was unneeded (for ME!) All credit goes to

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

, I just wrote up the instructions! Thanks man, you're a lifesaver :D

Finally, I'm not responsible for any damage you do to your phone!! Read instructions carefully!
