I was never able to get TWRP or CWM to do anything on my phone -- lack of technical expertise on my part. The main reason I rooted was to be able to move data to my external SIM card and find or move stuff around where I want with simple Linux commands.  I'd love to master TWRP or CWM and master sideloading which is misterious to me -- also in part because I have a new Samsung Galaxy S Tab 8.4 that I hate the skin and bloatware on.  Hence am slowly dipping my toe into a safe rooting method for that one -- and I'd need to use CWM to flash a different ROM on it.   (Since I'm not a dev but what you guys call a noobie, I roughly understand this stuff in very general terms, but not in actual practice and hence need to proceed carefully.)

But first, is there a way to turn off the above OTA nag reminder that will otherwise henceforth pop up every day?  I'm not worried about the FakeID exploit (should I be?) and I never use Bluetooth.

I got the notification too but when I clicked on it, nothing happened and when I went to About Phone, it says deferred for status.  I'm still on 183.46.10 but since this is OTA, I'll move to 183.46.15 using the patches here.  I was more worried about being stuck at 183.46.15 if they somehow made updating from 183.46.10 possible but not versions after that to the newer version, that was before today though.

Of course. I just installed Validus on my phone.

Pretty happy with it so, I'll be sticking with it for awhile.

The ota or fxz has the same filename as your current version? I snatched it if that's the case. It was four files. I just did the update on mine and it left root intact. Is that typical?

Why am I not surprised I haven't received the update yet.  Can't even pull it using "check for updates".  VZW hates me, I'm always at the tail end of the push, lol.

You keep saying FXZ.  Trust me, you do not have an FXZ.  The OTA is not the same thing.

After you've installed the update, what version does your phone say it is under About Phone?

If you kept root installed and you didn't lose root, AND if you are definitely on the .15 official OTA update, this update is going to be easier than we all thought to install.

Sucessful boot. Patch seems to have completed still have root.  Screen shot to follow.

What Sams says...

FXZ are generally rather large files 600-700+ MB

OTA are generally much smaller, often 50-60MB but of course vary depending on how much they need to push out. Some of the latest smaller ones were only 10MB

OTA filenames will match the current version you are on.  Part of the verification process.  Some updates will let root stay.  Depends on the purpose of the update.

I'll repeat my warning from the OP....if you are not unlocked, do not install this update.  Cause once you do, you'll not ever be unlocked.

OK. Fair warning, I was still stock at the time I did update with SuperSU, rooted and unlocked. This is what OTA snatcher showed.

It was already sent to me.  So no need to worry about capturing it.  It updates build 183.46.10 to 183.46.15 and does not appear to LOSE root, however, it can't be rooted unless you're unlocked.

Hmmm Go back and look at the edited post.  May not happen for everyone but it did here.

I had made full backups before I tried this.  Would not have given it a shot with out them.

So does that mean to get to 15 you need to be on 10?? what about the 14 update? drop back to 10 then update it?

I was on 10.  I hadn't applied the soak. I just took the ota and told it to install.

May be a n00b question, but is there a simple way to block the OTA? If it's only a security fix then I see no reason to bother installing the update (and risking a brick).

The patch from 14 to 15 has been in the OP for weeks now.  Just sayin'.  ;)
