For those of you that want a more detailed writeup here it goes...

  • Flash back to stock .211 via matt's utility (option 1)
  • After setting up phone again root it via matt's utility (option 2)
  • Download and install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
  • Click the "protect root" button
  • Click Temp. Unroot
  • Click Restore Root
  • Click Temp. Unroot again
  • Plug usb into your phone and copy the update over to your external sd card.
  • Hold Power and both Volume Up and Down until boot screen appears
  • From boot screen, scroll down to “Recovery” with Volume Down
  • Press Volume Up to select it once it has been highlighted
  • When Android and exclamation show up, press both Volumes at the same time
  • Then “install update from external storage” and find Blur_Version.6.16.211.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip
  • Flash update (flash will take like 10 minutes)
  • Wipe data (factory reset) <-- Probably optional but recommended
  • After going through initial setup again download Voodoo OTA from market again and click restore root button
  • Download superuser/super su from market
  • PROFIT!
This is the exact steps that I took and I have root. Hopefully this helps out...

you missed a step b/w 7 and 8, look at the op again. You're supposed to "restore root" before flashing the update.

Now you can just use Super Root :D

Hey guys, can someone explain what the second link in the OP does? Will it restore my root if voodoo didn't work for me? Thanks!

Can we root on Jellybean if I already updated and didn't protect root? Nope.. not yet anyway. Maybe a long way down the road.

This is no longer the case, once the OEM Firmware xml's became available as outlined in my post "Successful JB Root for Motorola Devices"

This is the 1st I have heard about being able to really go back to ics to save root. But the information is for the razr maxx hd.... Not the og razr. Do they have enough in common to make this work for razr maxx or og razr?

Will not work. Secure version of the bootloader had been updated. You simply can not go back to ICS as the secure version of the files is lower.

UPDATE: Fixed the issue I was having. I can't take credit but Matt helped out by pushing the su-backup into the system folder and everything was fixed. Thanks a million Matt!

I have the same problem. Can you give instructions on the process?

I used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and I still lost root/cannot restore root! Download and run this in Windows. USB Debugging Enabled, MTP mode.

I'm sort of soft bricked. I ran the Unbrick utility and all steps were successful. I rebooted into recovery and when I try to apply the JB update it results in a "assert failed: apply_path_space"

I've tried wiping cache and data multiple times before applying the update and it still fails. I've validated MD5.
I can get back into recovery and fastboot.

Any suggestions?

Best regards,

Isn't the unblock utility for those who are already on jb? I think some people have been able to install the update again even after being on jb so I'm not sure why it's not working for you but have you tried booting up and checking if your on .211 or 98.72.8 I think. And are you applying the update from stock recovery. I don't think you have a choice since using unblock utility but just making sure

Idk what is preferred when it comes to inverted apps working best with custom roms but I see a lot of roms use travp inverted apps. You could try a google search. I use rujelus inverted apps. It seems to be kept updated

I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED.

I followed everything, temp unrooted, etc......It ran the update no problem. When it booted, I had SU icon. I restored root, BUT DON'T HAVE ROOT ACCESS.
If I hit SU, VooDoo is listed there, but if I hit update binaries, it d/l's them, then fails when getting root access

I even tried that RestoreRoot.zip from MattG, and it just fails??

Any ideas?? HELP(Also, SU I can't uninstall (was going to reinstall it?, just a stab in the dark, but it's there to stay, just to working?)

THANKS...S

I am starting to wonder if Verizon is watching these threads.

Also I am starting to think that Verizon is using this leak to see how we get root and then close that hole that we use to get root.

Then you wouldn't be able to get root on the new lineup of the RAZR family. They probably do have at least someone keeping tabs, but its improbable they would be using forums for that nefarious purpose. Why would they focus all that effort and money on a device series that's over a year old and obsolete? Its not cost productive for them, and if they were to enact something along those lines, it would have occurred within the new RAZR lineup. Because its possible to root the new lineup, if they are watching mod forums, they're not using them to prevent root.

It seems that many of us lost root during the upgrade, and all we can do now is wait...

As long as you were rooted beforehand, you can still regain root after the JB update because you still have old binaries.

If users are unable to do so, I'd recommend going back and rereading the instructions in 2 of the main threads that address this issue.

A lot of users whom are unable to regain root after the update are due to not full reading and fully following the instructions laid forth. This is a recurring problem for some reason, why, I'm unsure since reading instructions is the most basic of understandings.
