I thought it might be polite to introduce myself and express a bit of awe and appreciation for all of the experts on here before I fire away with my first noob question. I'm a fairly typical middle-aged male... I'm happy to use phone technology, but am really about as far from being an expert/developer/etc as it is possible to get (that is, without being my parents).
I'd had a Razr, moved to what is now a poorly abused Droid 2 that gave me great coverage, and withstood numerous drops, bumps and other semi-serious mishaps. The phone outlasted two cases that didn't survive all the same drops, bumps, etc. Finally I dropped it one to many times and the poor screen gave out, with the top quarter of the pixels turning black (interestingly to me, I could still "touch-activate" things in the area, I just couldn't see anything.)
To shorten the story, I wanted to stick with a Motorola device since I feel I've been well served by them. I "broke down" and bought a Razr HD (the day before they announced the Droid Ultra - a nice bit of buyers remorse there, but I couldn't afford to live another month with my screen in the shape it was). After "playing" around with my new phone for a few days, I have to admit that I'm a bit underwhelmed (probably my expectations were to high to begin with). Frankly, I know some of the problem is me and as I "learn the phone" better, I will become more impressed. But I have more than a sneaking suspicion that some of the problem is all of the Verizon bloatware on the phone (that I will never use but can't delete).
Hoping to find out which apps I could safely delete and how to delete them, I began poking around the web. At which point I encountered terms like root, bootloader, and ROM. Which mostly showed me that my ignorance is quite dangerous and I could easily break my phone and/or end up with even worse things like malware, etc.
Which lead me to create an account and post here. I doubt that I will ever have the aptitude, knowledge or skill to constructively participate in discussions. But I want to let you folks who do know that I appreciate it and any/all help you might lend me and all of us other noobs out there.
